I don't know about linux, but in solaris, you need to be added to the "vboxuser" group in order to have permission to access USB subsystem. Also, I have heard, there is a bug that affects some systems under some situations (not sure if it's applicable to you): With more than one CPU given to guest, the guest can't access USB. If that is indeed your problem, there is an official bug reported, and you can watch the status of that bug to be informed of resolution when it's available.
