Hi Stephen,
What you need likely need installed are the GUEST ADDITIONS in Virtualbox.
Did you install those?
Follow the steps provided here:
https://www.virtualbox.org/manual/ch04.html#idp54739648
Basically, for Debian, do as root
apt-get install dkms make gcc linux-headers*
Then mount the guest additions .iso file to your virtual machine, and
change to the directory (cd)
where your CD-ROM drive is mounted and execute as root:
sh ./VBoxLinuxAdditions.run
