I don’t know what you’ve tried yet, but I’ve restored successfully a number of 
times. I do the backup of the VM folder with all VM’s off and the VBox manager 
closed. I found out the hard way trying to backup or restore with anything of 
VBox open is a disaster. With everything closed I can restore by copying the 
backup over the original and then restart VBox and everything works. I’ll have 
to think about how I recovered when I had a situation like you have, but you 
might try closing everything about VBox down and then copying the backup to the 
original. I might just work.
