No suggestions, but a couple of questions (not sure if they are all relevant, but whatever): are you running the guest in full-screen on the laptop screen? Do you see the same thing if you swap the screens (guest on external, host applications on the laptop)? Which of the two screens is the primary one? (run "xrandr" in a terminal to see.)
