My problem is as I said in the subject line.  The weird this is that 
Windows 7 SAYS it has sound.  Linux running on the box (that's running 
the vm) has sound, just not Windows.  It's an older VB - 
virtualbox-4.3.32.   I know probably the first thing you'll tell me to 
do is upgrade to the newest stable virtualbox, but I'm not sure I'm 
confident enough yet to do that.  I've glanced at the forums at 
virtualbox website and seen about twenty threads reporting problems that 
sound like mine, but someone on this list commented about two weeks ago 
how they wished there was more traffic on this list, so I'm asking here 
now.  Another problem I've noticed with the Windows guest is if I leave 
it alone for awhile it stops recognizing keyboard input.  It stays that 
way until I power down the machine from the Virtualbox menu.  I don't 
know if the two problems are related or not, but I just thought I'd 
throw it out there and see if it's familiar to anyone...
