I had a similar issue with a USB device just this past week.

Even though USB is enabled in VBox, individual USB devices are not enabled by default. You can tell VBox to always connect to your USB devices by editing the settings of the VM > USB > click the 2nd icon on the right side to add an entry for each device.

Here is a screenshot of my settings, showing my USB headset:

I have been using virtual box for some years on a ubuntu 14.04 system.
The VirtualBox has Windows XP and Microsoft Office XP installed, as well
as some prgrams for transcribing record for FreeBMB and Family Tree
software. The virtual box allowed me to see and use printers and
scaners attached to the usb ports of my computer. All data files are
stored in the linux file system and accessed by links in the virtual box
settings.

I recently upgraded to Ubuntu 16.04. I installed the version of Virtual
box which came with the distribution ( version 5.0.24). I then restored
the virtual machine from my backups of the Linux home directory. While I
was able to open the virtual machine I could not access the printers or
scanners. The failure differed according to which printer or scanner I
tried to access.
Previously in 14.04 I was able to scan and print documents from within
the VirtualBox.

Now , while the settings for the virtual machine show the usb ports and
the scanners and printer connected to them, the scanner does not appear
in the windows scanner part of control panel. The printers do, but all
attempts to print fail on all three printer.

All three printers and the scanner work using Linux.

Is there any way of fixing this problem or do I need to recreate my
virtual machine and reload all of the software?
