Might be worth a try so see if that would take and then Lion boot
into 64 bit mode.
Looks like you could put 3GB of memory in it if you
can get it to boot 64bit. Still marginal for running a VM, but
it might work though a bit slow.

Thanks for the continued followup.
Here are the two I tried in 10.7.5, both
of which produced the "instant stop"
behavior:
4.3.40 and 4.0.36
If it's the problem with the hardware,
specifically the 32-bit EFI, then the
operating system, while relevant, won't
be the ultimate issue for this
particular system.
