I had a similar problem with Win7 guests that I run headless from vbox
across the network. On migration from 5.2.X to 6.0.X my windows guests slowed
to a crawl. The full details are contained in the thread:

Simple things like opening the Command Prompt and typing 'dir' would take
more than 60 sec to display 150 files.
Running strace on the process revealed read/write issues between the host
and guest. Unfortunately I did not get a resolution and ended up downgrading
to 5.2.X (current running 5.2.34) and the problems disappeared.
The advice I got in the thread was to use strace to try and narrow things
down, e.g.

strace VBoxManage startvm...
I tend to just watch stuff flow by, but you may want to save the output so
you'll need to do redirects to capture it or you can start the VM and do
ps -efw | grep vbox
vbox 21127 13705 26 2018 ? 4-19:58:40
/usr/lib/virtualbox/VBoxHeadless --comment win7-2 --startvm
8e8dd73e-315a-45cf-a4c7-3ca38ade0dfc --vrde config
strace -p <pid of the vm process>
strace -p 21127 1> trace.out 2>> trace.out
to attach to the running process and collect a trace of what it's up to.
