* The easiest way I know to solve the problem is to use VirtualBox Manager GUI and "Remove" the old entry and "Add" the new machine to the list.
* It is not advised to edit that file manually. The best way to add/remove/move VMs is via clients (VBoxManage, VrtualBox Mnager UI etc.) That is what I may end up doing, but I'd like to see the config that is being used in case it contains any hints as to why it's gone wrong. * Mine is in: * C:\Users\<username>\.VirtualBox\VirtualBox.xml Sorry, when I said : * The only VirtualBox.xml file that I can find That's what I meant. I have C:\Users\<username>\.VirtualBox\VirtualBox.xml Actually..... I think I have just this minute worked out what was happening. I've just realized that I have C:\Users\<username>\.VirtualBox\VirtualBox.xml, and also C:\Home\.VirtualBox\VirtualBox.xml It was the latter that I was looking at last week. The one under %USERPROFILE% appears to be correct. File locations and timestamps are sensible, matching what the Manager shows, and what I'd expect. Regards, Richard. When I run VirtualBox Manager (or VBoxManage list vms) it shows a list of known VMs. These have their configurations (ie .vbox files) stored in various locations. But how does VB Manager (or VBoxManage) know where they all are? I am asking because my VBox Manager is looking for some VMs that are no longer there, but is it still able to display their names, marked as "Inaccessible". But how does it know where they should have been in order now to show that they are not there any more? In all my cases the files have been moved to a new location, but sometimes it wasn't done properly. So VBox Manager can only show the location where they no longer are. This is on Windows. They all used to be under C:\Home\Virtual Box VMs, with some in C:\Users\Richard\Virtual Box VMs but I've moved some to another disk. The only VirtualBox.xml file that I can find was last modified long before I did those moves, and says that everything is under C:\Home, which it may have been once but no longer necessarily is, and whether they are or not they are still usable, so there must be something else that is telling VBox Manager where they ought to be. I am expecting that somewhere there is either a file listing them, or a registry entry, which I can edit in order to set the correct current locations.
