Good question. As I had never done this before, after the first failure
within the GUI, Google found me this link.

So I followed the troubleshooting suggestions, but they didn't solve the
problem.
I just re-tested the original files and at 100% complete, both in the
GUI and command line, the import fails with the same error.
I have an strace dump from the command line run if that will help
someone. I'm not a C/C++ programmer, so I'm not going to look in the code.
