Although I still can't get OS/2 installed as guest with openSuSE 10.1 host, I can report a slight change using VBox 1.3.4. No more Trap E or freezes, but Trap D instead, in module RESOURCE, at the same place immediately after the initial boot splash, but this time consistent in all OS/2 versions I've tried (MCP 4.52, eCS 1.2 and eCS 1.2R.
