There's no protection against it, either in Windows or Linux. Evidently though, there is no *NIX viruses in the wild that caused measurable damage. If you're using a Windows host, be sure to setup a good policy and run the guest as another limited account.
Why would anyone want to use Windows as a host - not the other way around - in development is beyond me :) so no worries.
