Well, I feel silly now....

I had commented out the "InputDevice "Mouse 2" SendCoreEvents" line in
XF68Config, *not* xorg.conf

I just now edited the line in xorg.conf, and the mouse works
fine....thanks, and sorry!!

I was *sure* I had edited xorg.conf....
