Yes, it does work, and it allows the outside to connect to the guest. 
But of course not if the host is not showing port 2222 to be waiting for 
connection (while the VM is running of course). There's nothing more to 
it other than in the manual, which you appear to have followed. Maybe 
there is a typo somewhere. Please send the output of 'VBoxManage 
getextradata "Linux Guest" enumerate' (please leave out the keys not 
starting with VBoxInternal, they are not relevant here).
