Hi Glen,
if you are using the beta 3 of the Virtual Box for Mac than I know the 
reason for this error. The shared folder support on the host side is 
broken. So the guest driver could not connect to the hosts sf 
implementation and quits. Sorry. Will be fixed in the next version.
