I did exactly what you tried to do (dynamic HD size) without any 
problem. In fact I'm running it now to support Linux-based Thunderbird 
while my laptop is in the shop. It works great.

I would try booting the openSUSE 10.3 Live CD and look at the dmesg 
output to see what it is saying about the hard drives. My system 
yields the following:
