Thanks Michael/Klaus.

I did enable I/O APIC by itself, but that didn't fix the problem, so
it looks like I have to use that Merge IDE utility you pointed me to.
Only problem is that it's written in German, so I don't really know
what it's doing and I don't want to just run it blind. I'm ok with
doing the 3rd step (renaming the driver on VBox), but what do I do
with that utility? How do I use it? What will it do to the original
system? I assume that's where I run it?
