Actually, you know what. I am able to get the DHCP assigned IP in the host for
Virtualbox TAP Adapter 1 in the 169.254.x.x subnet and then with a so called
Roaming Mode enabled or Ipv4 local mode in Ubuntu, I do get another IP
(non-conflicting) in 169.254.x.x subnet in the virtual machine. But I cannot
ping each other's IPs.
But all the same, could you help me understand this: If I do this in linux,
will I be able tos setup 2 VMs such that each VM will have a IP which should be
accessible from eachother. e.g. If VM1 has 10.0.2.10 and VM2 has 10.0.2.11, VM1
should beable to ssh into 10.0.2.11 and vice-versa?
Also, will I be able to have internet working?

I dont know about windows as a host for vbox guests.
I tried (a couple of times) to make Host Interace
networking on Windows work, for a Linx (Fedora) guest.
It never worked, even with guest tools installed.
You would think that VBOX on windows would automatically
enable NAT'ing and IP-FORWARDING when the virtual machine,
which is configured with Host interface, is started. But
that does not seem to be the case.
Also, the host is unable to obtain an IP address, which
is also something that VBOX should enable on the windows
host virtual interface (i.e. turn on the DHCP service on
the virtual interface), so the host can obtain an ip address.
Slowly, I think the developers will polish this nice product.

1. You need to use Host Interface - NOT NAT.
2. You will need to enable the DHCP daemon on the host to
accept requests over the tap0 interface.
3. You will need to use tunctl to create tap0 and
ifconfig it to ip address 10.0.2.1 (for example)

What kind of a virtualbox networking setup do I need? Till now, I havebeen able
to make only NAT and internal networking work -- with windowshost and Ubuntu
VMs. Host Only networking is turning out difficult toget to work.. even with
the promiscuous wireless mode in windows.
I would appreciate your thoughts.
