Starting with VirtualBox 2.1 it is necessary to select a 64-bit flavor in the VM settings. If these flavors are not displayed, then your CPU does not support 64-bit. For instance, Core Duo CPUs from Intel do support VT-x but do NOT support 64-bit. What do I mean by '64-bit flavor'?
