Your shared folders aren't going to appear in /dev, no where in the
virtualbox manual does it state that shared folders will appear in /dev.

You should be able to do that just like you would from a linux guest
residing on a hard drive. I think the shared folder support module is
vboxfs.ko, but don't quote me on that, since I'm not booted into a
gnu/linux guest now, and I don't recall for sure off the top of my
head. So, you'd modprobe the vboxfs module, assuming that's what it's
called, and mount your share as described in the manual.

I think the guest additions install script says you need to reboot to
simplify the guest additions start procedure, instead of having the
user figure out what to start, and how. What I'm saying is that I
don't think it's actually necessary to reboot, if you know how to
start things up. I do stand to be corrected on that of course.
