I can only give you hope. I run opensuse 11.1 x86_64 and vbox
2.1.4_42893_openSUSE111-1 x86_64 and with earlier versions of vbox I had
the same symptoms as you have using an old 4G nano. It was seen as mass
storage but itunes wouldn't pick it up. With my present setup, I
successfully restored the ipod with itunes just as if it had been on a
win xp box.
The latest series of virtualbox doesn't need fstab usb entries and works
with hal and on opensuse at least installs flawlessly with no user
intervention needed so to start with you should remove all trace of vbox
(except for vdi of course) and fresh install, Make sure your hal and
base system is up to date as well.
