With VirtualBox 2.2 you can use "Host-Only Network" connection type.
This will make your host + VM be in one virtual network.

Last time I could not successfully get host to communicate to guest without the host interface actually up.

Somehow I got it works by using VMWare's interface. How do I make one without actually installing VMware product?
