I should have said in my first e-mail, but I did indeed get the correct MD5, so it seems to be some problem other than data corruption.

I think you are on to something with your tip of reducing the virtual machine RAM. I initially had it set to 4GB (thereabouts) when the installation crashed (I have 12GB on the machine). I successfully installed Ubuntu 8.04 by setting the ram to 2GB.

Why does the RAM setting effect the stability!? I thought that VMs performance is related to how much RAM it can access?

I will trying installing 9.04 with low RAM conditions, and report back.
