Thought I would go ahead and add that I tested the process of upgrading the guest additions without any problems. I ran it first as an upgrade (without uninstalling) and then reverted back and did it again this time uninstalling as you did and then installing. It sounds like you may be experiencing one of those DLL-hell situations where another program is doing things at the DLL or driver level that it shouldn't.
