I was having the same type of problem plus shared folder not working. I have the OSE Open Source edition that is fully GPL. I was told that USB is supported on the PUEL edition. I guess that's free like the flash player and adobe reader. see http://ubuntuforums.org/archive/index.php/t-617552.html
