Hello,

First some details:
1. Host OS on which virtualbox is installed: Ubuntu 9.04
2. I'm running vbox 2.1.4_OSE and have a Ubuntu 9.04 VM (henceforth refered
to as host VM) on it.

I recently compiled my first linux kernel on the host VM (2.6.24-7 source
from kernel.org). The compiled kernel simply wouldn't boot. My grub entry
said that my root was at /dev/sda1 (I don't know if it was valid to assume
this since host VM was /'d at /dev/sda1). Almost all of the text scrolled
and I didn't have any log entries since my fs mounted read only. I only had
dmesg's output to look at and it seemed to have thought my virtual disk was
hda (IDE/ATA) rather than sda.

I went back and changed my root to hda1 but it still mounted my fs as read
only at which point I changed my kernel boot options (in grub) from ro to rw
and this somehow seemed to work and this time it gave me a recovery menu
during startup and when i chose boot normally, i got my login screen. (My
kernel is still unusable because for some reason my mouse won't work but
that's a different issue)

Next, i boot into host VM and check syslog and this is what it says about my
disk.

/dev does not have either sdaX or hdaX and i've no idea what could be wrong.
On host VM, the very same disk is treated as SCSi (probably because I got it
off the VMWare appliance site and it was built for VMWare).

Could somebody please help.
