Using vpasswd

I have some web pages written in php and would like to access the vpasswd
file to validate email addresses entered on these pages.  That's easy enough
to do with php but by default I do not have access to this file via a web
page based on the permissions.  How can I do this without compromising the
security of my vpopmail installation?
