[vchkpw] 5.40 configure errors

I am trying to compile Vpopmail 5.40 on Solaris 9 Intel.  I am getting configure errors.  I tried running configure with version 5.21 and it works fine.  It looks like the new version uses C++ instead of just C.  Here are the errors:   Bash-2.05# ./configure  --prefix=/opt/vpopmail --enable-logging=y checking for a BSD-compatible install... /usr/bin/ginstall -c checking whether build environment is sane... yes checking for gawk... gawk checking whether make sets ${MAKE}... yes checking build system type... i386-pc-solaris2.9 checking host system type... i386-pc-solaris2.9 checking for g++... g++ checking for C++ compiler default output... a.out checking whether the C++ compiler works... configure: error: cannot run C++ compiled programs.
