That is what causes it. since it does not pass vuserinfo a proper username, it can do nothing. Which is why you get the error messages you are getting. What i found is that if i give vpopmail a shell (/bin/sh), all works perfectly and i have no problems what so ever. (This is on FreeBSD 4.10) So i don't know where the problem lies, but i know it fixed it for me. See if that works for you :).
