Aaron, I figured out the problem. I needed to make sure to supply the -v option to vcld. It was working all along but I just didn't see it.
BTW, I am installing on Debian 5.0 "Lenny" rather than RH/Centos. Thus I had to write a different init.d script and in doing so I forgot to add the DAEMON_OPTIONS. At any rate, I plan to check the changes back in when I get it all working. Should I also be creating/updating a wiki page for this?
