Hi,

(apologies for the resend, but the last message was fairly unreadable)

I wanted to repeat my call to action on Velocity, which was buried in a
thread "new development" on the user list.

Despite the loud vocalizations of some, I have a feeling that this project
is not dead yet There's a good size user base, and a number of talented
developers out there who have created patches for their own system. It'd be
great if we could get some of these public, maybe create a list.

Two reasons people may be resistant:
--Some developers (myself included) are concerned that the patches may not
be committed. This is clearly has been an issue. The number of active
committers are few (1 or 2, depending how you count it). But Geir says he's
going to try to get some patches in. I say... give him a chance.

--You may feel the patch may not be ready for prime time exposure. I
suggest you share it anyway. Maybe someone else can take it, tweak it,
enhance it, and share it back. At the very least you can get some comments
and thoughts from others.

Not sure how to submit a patch? Not sure how to run the test suite? Ask!
Everyone's at a different level of experience. Someone posts on
velocity-dev with an idea? Respond-- give them feedback, encourage them to
participate.

By the way, I do believe that new committers will come. How do we get new
committers? By selecting from those who contribute good code and ideas.
Don't believe me that the current committers will put in the patches?
Submit anyway. Others will still be able to make use of the code, and
eventually we'll stage a rebellion and take over the CVS access :-)

I'm optimistic about the state of Velocity and the Velocity Community. The
user base is terrific. My personal feeling is that the V. dev community has
been in a bit of a rut this past year, both in terms of committing and in
terms of discussion. I suggest we drop the negative discussion for a while
and focus on how WE, the Velocity community, can help each other and the
project get some new momentum.

Thank you very much... I'll relinquish the soapbox now.

WILL
