Thanks, Henning!

Re: changing the year in the licensing text. There's been some discussion of the year in the licensing text in legal-discuss. According to Cliff Schmidt, we aren't supposed to update the year unless the file is actively changed in that year. I didn't know this either. I've attached his message at the bottom of this email.

Looking forward to when Cliff publishes his notes on such issues. (is this pun appreciable for non-American readers? Probably not. Google for "Cliff Notes").

Cheers,
WILL

I realize you are joking, Martin...but just to be clear for everyone:

Adding the current year to a copyright notice for a work that does not
include any new copyrightable expression that year would appear to be
an attempt to continuously extend copyright protection beyond what the
law allows. So don't do that. (as if anyone really needs to extend
copyright protection further into the 22nd century).

As Niclas indicated, you should only update the year when some
substantial addition is made to the work. For instance, adding or
rewriting a method/function would sound to me like new copyrightable
expression; but, changing the value of a constant or renaming
something would not likely be protected under copyright law.

To answer Niclas's inquiry about an update to the copyright notices, I
will have something on that as soon as I finish the license policy
draft, which will be published on this list within two weeks.

Hi,

I've written a short summary about building Velocity snapshots using
maven and also the release process.

Also, I've renamed the core repository to engine.

Some of the docs have been rewritten but not yet committed. Same for
the main site. I'll try to get some more work done this week but
probably nothing of this show up before friday.

There is also the issue of updating the license files (we have '06
now) and the discussed style fixing of the code (which would help the
checkstyle plugin tremendously but will probably render most of the
patches in JIRA as non-applyable without manual intervention.

The license update I want to do this week, the actual reformatting not
before most of the 1.5 bugs are closed and we are ready to RC1.

Best regards
Henning
