I think Resin used to be significantly faster than Tomcat, but over the last few years, I think Tomcat has pretty well caught up and is amoungst the faster of the web apps.
I can't comment about custering with Tomcat, I have been in prod environments where it is used and it worked fine, but I wasn't responsible for the setup.
