Straight through cable vs crossover? That's kind of a stumper.. I asked our san guy about that, and he tells me that some that he gets that are one way where they should be the other (and has had to send some back because the connectors weren't adjustable to swap positions).
I'll admit I know enough about FC to get my backup stuff running, but not much more.
