I think issues were to be expected. 6.5 is a regular enhancement release so I don't expect you will see the same challenges as going to 6.0. I think part of the delay in releasing the code was to make sure it was as stable as it could possibly be going out the door. If you are moving from 5.X to 6.5, there is still all the same pre-work that needs to be done to make sure the upgrade is successful however.
