Unless you used something like esxranger to backup the vmware server instances to a physical machine then used the existing license to backup the images. Esxranger is licensed per cpu of the esx box. If it has 4 cpus you would need to license 4 to backup that esx box.

For a Vmware physical server, you need one client license per OS. F'rinstance, a box running ESX, with Windows and Linux virtual servers on it, would require 1 windows and 1 linux license.
