My original point here was that Symantec AntiVirus precisely fails to permit exclusions of the sort you describe. (It's not the only AntiVirus product out there, but it's also not the only one with a broken exclusion methodology, and it is one of the more popular. And comes from, ahem, the same vendor as NetBackup.)
