I have done it in the past, you need to do a cold backup of the NBU catalog (5.1 allows only cold backup) and then use bprecover -dhost to recover the databases. I did it twice, no issues. I personally don't see a need to involve consulting in it, only difference is that they have done it once or twice (or have access to docs) and you haven't. Good Luck.
