The complexities of multipathing software and volume management tools makes removing devices more difficult, but Linux isn't the only one that suffers from that.
Take note that one thing I do miss in Linux is that the iostat command does not have the ability to show tape devices and their utilization which I find very useful in the world of NBU. If the tape device is fibre channel, then you can get some of that depending on the HBA model and the driver version and if its through a switch, you can get it from there as well.
