We just took over this new environment...  So historical data isn't 
there....

The HOT catalog works....  We have a test environment were we have done 
catalog recovers...

Just the timing is way off....  This occurs on both tape and disk.... 

COLD backups are speedy...  These usually run at 1hr....

Have the hot catalog backups ever worked properly? Do you have a tape 
drive available at the time of the hot catalog backup?  I suggest setting 
VERBOSE = 5 in bp.conf, make the appropriate log directories and see what 
is happening during the time the catalog backup is scheduled to run.
