Len,

I am in the middle of a DPM POC right now. DPM does not perform any
de-duplication for servers (like PureDisk), if you have 10 copies of the same
document on your server DPM will back up all 10. DPM backs up\recovers
SharePoint very well (document level, site, site collection, farm), in my
opinion. I'm using it to protect some branch office servers over small pipes,
its bandwidth throttling works well.

De-duplication is on their "to do" list (they didn't mention it as a new
feature in DPM V3 though, their next release).

The last time I looked at DPM, it looked like a nice product, if a site was
Microsoft only with products that worked with VSS. But unless they have updated
it, the product does not work with other OS's.

The first pass of DPM only wrote to disk. If a site wanted an offsite tape
copy, they had to use another product to back DPM up. I believe that backupexec
had a DPM option. I do not remember if netbackup also supported this.

I suspect as a block level backup DPM would compare more with the netbackup
pure disk product or whatever they might have renamed it to.

Let us know what you find out.

So how to I convince my VP of IT that BPM doesn't even play in the same space
as NetBackup, when the keep hearing the BPM is "Enterprise Level" and think
that they can replace NetBackup with it?

I'd rather not have to actually set it up and end up with two backup
enviorments to manage.
