If they're run too closely together, it, for some reason, picks a new tape - it must be a way to delays caused by mounting & positioning. I've seen this in backups, too. On my third backup of the set, it picked the first tape.
One way around this is to put a list of images to be backed up in a file. Generate this as a first step. Then feed the list into bpduplicate as a -Bidfile. Your second email's question would be multiplexing two sets of images onto a single tape.
