The GRT restores (at least in Exchange 2010) don’t require NFS on the Windows server but do require a storage device to send the backups to which can NOT be a deduplication appliance. In our environment we have disks allocated to our Linux master server and do the GRT backup to those disks via the storage unit defined in NBU.
The GRT backups allow for granular (i.e. single mailbox) restores as opposed to restoring the whole Exchange backup. We do both the GRT and the full backup. The full backup allows for restore in case our entire Exchange DB gets hosed. It seems to me there are like 4 different kinds of backups for Exchange.. that GRT (Granular Recovery) that seems to need NFS for windows (UGH), snapshot backups, Instant Recovery backups, and MAPI backups. Is there a document that succinctly explains these and the differences? What method of backup for Exchange do most NetBackup installations employ? Any pointers would be greatly appreciated.
