Are you referring to NDMP backups? Variables set, such as "set HIST=no" or "set SNAPSURE=y" are configured in the backup policy file list and just passed along to the NDMP device. It's up to the NDMP device to understand them and use them.
You need to refer to the documentation for the NDMP device for more information on supported values.
