My suspicion is that value (media data expiration) is a value that can only
increment. It is a convenience value that really doesn't mean anything
concrete, since images expire, not media. (Well, media can expire, but for
different reasons, and media expiration means NBU will not write to it any more
and has nothing to do with the images on the media.)

Any operation on the tape that involves an expiration time:
changing expiration of an image,
writing a new image, etc.,
causes the expiration of that image to be compared to the media data expiration
time.
If the expiration of the image has a later time stamp than the media data
expiration, then the media data expiration is set equal to the image expiration.

The media will still return to scratch once all the images have expired, during
the daily "deassign empty" run.

Subject: [Veritas-bu] Data Expiration

NBU 6.5.6

Windows 2008 x64

I used the following command to change the retention of images from 1 year to 6
months but the ‘Data Expiration’ date shown on the media in the GUI or when
running bpmedialist (see below for syntax) did not change.

bpexpdate -recalculate -backupid [name_time] -ret 6 -force

bpmedialist -m [media_id]

I did verify both from the GUI (Reports -> Tape Reports -> Images On Tape, and
using bpimmedia -mediaid [media_id]) that all images on the media have had
their retention changed.

Any ideas?
