This is one of the truly great things about Veritas Volume Manager.
When I first realized I could take a couple of JBOD disks chassis worth
of disks, dump them into a pile, insert them into the chassis in random
order (not necessarily even into the same chassis), and connect the
chassis to different controllers, or connect the chassis to a different
system (running VxVM), and it would all work, I was amazed. You don't
even have to reboot the system, if the devices were not in use when you
removed them, and if the system can scan the disk bus and create the
devices on the fly (eg cfgmgr on AIX or devfsadm on Solaris).

All the information about the diskgroups and their components is in the
private region on each disk. As long as the OS can read the disk, you
can ask Volume Manager to scan the private region on the disks and from
there Volume Manager knows how to put it back together, even if it was a
bunch of mirrored plexes that were then striped together.

It is very likely to change the controller portion of the device at a
minimum.

Yes, VxVM should handle that gracefully. As long as all the disks are
"visible" to the OS, VxVM will find the information that describes how
the diskgroup is arranged. Name and specific path changes should have
no effect on proper operation of the volumes.
