There are features in the latest VxVM one needs under certain circumstances and cannot do without. These relate to SAN functionality: if you have an up-to-date array delivering your LUNs you will likely find that the older Veritas doesn't work. If you get it to work, it won't be stable. This is most definitely the case with the Oracle Unified Storage series (AKA Sun 7xxx such as 7410) where the necessary APM only works with v5.1 Storage Foundation and at that there are bugs which are fixed so you must use the current RP. If you try it on an older OS release with the back-level version of SF you see your LUNs and you can create volumes and put filesystems on them...and then they go away or get oddly corrupted. So to with the Hitachi 9990V though you don't quite need the very latest RP you will want the APM from 5.1. OTOH, if your shop is still on e.g. a 9990 or Sun StorageTek 6140 then you can indeed get away with v5.0MP3 (until you push it too hard) because those are more 'mature' products (i.e. they already are End Of Sales Life with the countdown to End of Support Life having begun). Maybe you have a 9980 and hanging on past the imminent End Of Support Life, in which case you have bigger issues than which version of Veritas.

Always consider 1-2version behind the mainline, and wait for other people to test. 2011/3/23 William Havey <[email protected]>: > The changes within the latest version of a SYMC product are documented in > the Release Notes for the product.
