A C++ version of the test program works fine on Ubuntu, so I don't think it's a qt4 issue. I've tried building the latest PyQt4/SIP by hand on my Ubuntu system, and the test program appears to now work. I've reported this on the Ubuntu bug. It looks like it's a PyQt bug fixed in the latest release. So, you could either build by hand SIP and PyQt4 (a big pain, as these need to be kept separate from the system installed ones), or find out whether there are updated packages which would install. I'll try to upgrade PyQt on the system I use to make the binaries, so this might solve a few peoples' problems.
