I assume that the dataset is listed in the dataset browser? The problem might be that the dataset doesn't have the "Text" type. If your labels look like numbers, Veusz might have imported the data numerically. You can't use a numerical dataset as a label (though perhaps this should be fixed). You can override the autodetection of the data type using " (text)" after the dataset name.
