There aren't that many bears that come down to the low country, except in times of extreme drought. However, we did have a mama and her two cubs come all the way down to the Villa at Philmont Scout Ranch, which is 4 miles South of Cimarron. The mom and the two cubs spent all day around the Villa and Philmont office, with the mom eating apples that had fallen from apple trees and her cubs practicing their climbing on the Cottonwoods. Lots of folks got some great pics. I've encountered three blacks while fishing, but never had one pay much attention to me. In all the years that Philmont has hosted thousands of Boy Scouts each summer, only a few have had run- ins with the blacks. No fatalities, no really serious injuries. Most were hungry bears looking for a handout. One thing you don't do at Philmont is keep food and candy handy. The Scouts Keep their food in Bear Bags, which hang considerably off the ground on a cable line between trees.
